My story…
My travels started on December 10th, 2019 whenI closed the door to my house for the last time.
The previous three months had been a whirlwind. Selling my house of twenty-three years. Relinquishing most everything I owned. Then saying goodbye to friends — and to a life that I had focused on building for so many years.
It sounds a bit sad, but it wasn’t. I was ready. Ready for a new adventure.
I’ve always loved travel. In the back of my head I had always hoped I’d get to a time in my life where I could do it full time. Explore the countries I’ve only dreamed about. Wander aimlessly down dusty roads. Waking up having no idea what the day would bring. And of course, meeting people from different places and seeing how our lives connected.
These dreams started that day.
I wanted adventure. I got it. Three months after I left, Covid hit. Hard. I had a choice to make. Come back to the US or continue my travels. It was obvious that there was no going back.
It has been an interesting time to travel during the Covid years. So many people felt trapped, unable to move. But I saw a different world. One that seemed to be on pause — to the relief of many who had been exhausted by years of over-tourism.
But as the crowds returned, I have continued on my journey. I am interested in how the world is resetting. New world indeed.
The purpose to this blog has changed over the years. What started as blow by blow descriptions, has evolved into more self-reflection. I have seen travel change me. Certainly, I am not the person who set out all those years ago.
I am still the optimist. We are living in an exciting time in a big glorious world. I feel lucky to be out there. And happy to share my insights with you.
Reflections from the road…
Traveling the world seems like the perfect life - immersing in new cultures, seeing breathtaking sights, meeting fascinating people. But even amidst this joy, there are moments of darkness. You wake up disoriented, feeling lost and homesick. Depression and loneliness creep in.
Yet, this isn't unique to travel. It's part of the human condition, happening even in familiar surroundings or during positive life changes. The key is focusing on the present.
Accept these feelings without fighting them. Breathe deeply, practice gratitude, and take simple actions. Remember, nothing lasts forever - including the darkness. By embracing impermanence, you'll find strength you didn't know you had.
New Zealand has been floating in my imagination for as long as I can remember. Literally years. It's just one of those unique places — too far away for a quick visit, so in order to visit, you have to spend some time. And time is what I have. I threw it out to my old friend JJ. He barely hesitated.

Finding Freedom: How Long-Term Travel Transformed My Life
It was time for a change. I didn't want to stop exploring altogether; there are still so many places on my bucket list. However, I needed a home base—a central location from which I could venture out. Like a wheel's hub with its spokes, I wanted a stable point to anchor my adventures. Discover why Thailand became my choice and how it has transformed my journey.
After nearly four years on the road, I've gained a unique perspective on travel. In the past, traveling was an adventure, with heavy backpacks, unclear directions, and limited ways to stay in touch with family. Now, with smartphones, travel apps, and instant communication, it's easier and cheaper than ever to explore the world.
This summer, I've been hopscotching through Europe, starting in Scotland and then heading to Paris. It had been years since I'd been in Paris, and it was the perfect time to catch up, explore the arrondissements, and immerse myself in the city's unique charm. Join me as I share my European journey and why the simple pleasures of a Parisian holiday are unforgettable.
Scotland's natural beauty is breathtaking, but it's also quite expensive. As I explored this stunning country I noticed that it was packed with visitors from all over, not just Brits. Summer is short, and with kids off from school, many tourists rush to see as much as they can. Join me as I share my unique perspective on traveling through Scotland and why sometimes it's better to go with the flow.
Returning to the US is always a mix of nostalgia and discovery. This year, I eased into my visit with a few weeks in Hawaii, catching up with old friends, before heading to Los Angeles, my home for many years. Each trip back is a chance to reflect on how I've changed since leaving almost four years ago.
Upgrading to business class on a long-haul flight from Thailand to Hawaii seemed like a great idea—lie-flat beds, gourmet meals, and fine wine. But what started as a luxurious experience turned into a nightmarish ordeal. After a smooth flight from Bangkok to Tokyo, my journey took an unexpected turn when I couldn't urinate.
As I've traveled and adopted a nomadic lifestyle, the bonds with my friends have grown stronger. I cherish the connections I've built and know that keeping them requires consistent effort. It's a commitment I'm willing to make, and the rewards are worth it. If you value deep and lasting friendships, remember to stay connected, show appreciation, and, most importantly, be there for each other.
After more than three years on the road, I've noticed a shift in how I approach travel. Sightseeing, which once defined my journeys, has taken a backseat to other experiences. It's not that I've stopped visiting iconic locations—some places, like Egypt's Great Pyramids, Turkey's Ephesus ruins, and Croatia's Plitvice Lakes, are simply unmissable—but the urgency to see every landmark has lessened.

On my travels I find myself attracted to putting myself in situations out of my comfort zone. I justify this by saying to myself that it keeps me young. But honestly, it's because I just like putting myself outside my comfort zone. And I guess that keeps me young.
So as I was planning my six week trip to Nepal, I decided to mix it up a bit. I wouldn't just sign up for a trek or two, I also signed up for a 11 day "Introduction to Buddhism" course at the renowned Kopan Monastery nestled in the hills above Kathmandu. I've had an interest in Buddhism for many years and incorporate many of its teachings into my life. But this certainly would take it to another level.
